His dad boxed, his uncle boxed, his grandfather boxed. The gym has always been a second home to him, and when the old boxers visit, it's not a pretty sight. Like a well-placed jab, it's a stinging reminder of everything that is wrong with boxing, and everything that the trainer is trying to get his fighters away from. "Hanging ears and slashed noses, that's not what fighting is supposed to be about," said Hunter, 59. "The fans never see the fighters 25 years down the road. ... You got guys who used to fight still coming to the gym now wearing diapers, or they can't find their way back home." Boxing is a brutal sport, with the loser often prone on the mat unable to get up. Especially the brand of boxing that fans love and spend $59 on pay-per-views -- the nonstop wars where the only strategy is to hit faster and harder than the guy standing across from you.
